History of Sexology

There have been sexual manuals to help humans with their sex lives for a long long time. Books like the Kama Sutra, Ananga Ranga and The Perfumed Garden for the Soul’s Recreation. As such sexology has been a topic since around the 1400’s.

The first real scientific reaseach on sex is said to have been in the 1830’s, when Alexander Jean Baptiste Parent-Duchatelet published a study of 3558 prostitutes who worked in Paris.

Later in the 19th century Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing published Psychopathia Sexualis, which is considered to be the first piece of work to established sexology as a scientific discipline.

Just over a decade later, and Englishman, Havelock Ellis, challenged the sexual taboos surrounding masturbation and homosexuality, and is said to have revolutionized the conception around sex at his time.

Nowadays many sexologists have access to better technology allowing sexological questions to be addressed with studies using behavioral genetics, neuro-imagina and internet surveys.
